Installing lead sheet

Workers installing lead sheet can take straightforward precautions to protect their health. These include:

  • avoiding smoking and eating when working with lead
  • good hygiene practices such as  thoroughly washing hands before eating or smoking
  • wearing a well-fitting, disposable mask if welding or removing old lead sheet
  • removing work wear before leaving site
  • ensuring blood lead levels are tested regularly

For further guidance on health and safety see the ELSIA Leadworker Safety Leaflet

The manual handling of weights in excess of 25kg should also be avoided wherever possible. Specific guidance on manual handling can be read in the revision of the standard EN12588. Safety Data Sheets, a well-recognised format for providing health and safety information to installers and consumers of lead sheet, are available from all ELSIA member websites
